Sierra Jenkins,a 25-year-old reporter for The Virginian-pilot, was one of two people killed when gunfire erupted outside a popular Granby Street nightspot in downtown Norfolk in March.

Dick Kelsey, a retired Associated Press broadcast editor who was revered as much for his humor as his hardworking nature, has died after a seven-year battle with cancer. He was 76. Kelsey died March 31 surrounded by loved ones at his Phoenix home.

Leo Eaton, a British expatriate who built Maryland Public Television’s production portfolio with international co-productions for PBS, died March 19 from health complications related to COVID-19. He was 76.

Stephen Steed, a longtime Arkansas news reporter who built a reputation for skillful writing, fairness and empathetic interviewing over decades of work at the Arkansas Gazette, Donrey and Stephens Media and finally the Arkansas Democratgazette, died at his home. He was 62 and lived in Little Rock. Recently, he had been working as the wire service editor for the Democrat-gazette’s business section.

Dirck Halstead, who was best known for his work for Time magazine, United Press International and

Life magazine, died March 25 in Boquete, Panama, of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was 85. He covered major world events for 50 years, including the Vietnam War, President Richard Nixon’s trip to China, the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan and the impeachment of President Bill Clinton.

At least seven journalists have been killed since Russia launched an assault on Ukraine in February. At the time this issue of Editor & Publisher went to press, the Committee to Protect Journalists was reporting that the following journalists had been killed while covering the war: Yevhenii Sakun, LIVE, killed March 1; Brent Renaud, Time, killed March 13; Pierre Zakrzewski, Fox News, killed March 14; Oleksandra Kuvshynova, Fox News, killed March 14; Oksana Baulina, The Insider, killed March 23; Maks Levin, Lb.ua, missing March

13, body found April 1; and Mantas Kvedaravicius, killed April 2.
