From the archive on January 3, 1959 — Members of the Newspaper Mail and Deliverers Union celebrate the end of their 19-day tie-up of New York City’s newspapers. As the men cheered, the presses rolled again and the deliverers lived up to their job of “putting feet under the bundles,” which were a negotiated reduction in weight from 53 to 50 pounds.
