The new editor-in-chief of

Colorado Community Media is Lisa

Schlichtman, an experienced, awardwinning news executive and an industry leader. Schlichtman, until recently the editor of the Steamboat Pilot & Today, joined CCM on Jan. 3. She will lead the news teams of CCM’S two dozen Colorado newspapers and websites as well as other publications. CCM was sold in 2021 by Jerry and Ann Healey to The Colorado News Conservancy, a partnership of The Colorado Sun and the National Trust for Local News dedicated to fostering community journalism.

Veteran newspaper executive Robyn

Mccloskey is the new publisher of The Herald Bulletin in Anderson, Indiana, replacing Beverly Joyce, who is departing for another career opportunity. Scott Underwood, editor of The Herald Bulletin and regional editor of CNHI newspapers in Indiana and Illinois, will take on the role of general manager at the Anderson newspaper. He will assist Mccloskey in managing operations at The

Herald Bulletin, retaining his editor responsibilities at the newspaper and regionally. Media executive Kristin Heitmann has been named senior vice president and chief revenue officer of The Associated Press, responsible for all of the news agency’s revenue functions globally. She will lead a division comprising AP’S sales, product, marketing and customer operations worldwide. She will serve on the AP Management Committee and report to incoming President and CEO Daisy Veerasingham.

The Sarasota (Florida) Heraldtribune and The Ledger in Lakeland have a new regional vice president of advertising. Nancy Solliday, a 35year veteran with Gannett, the news organizations’ parent company, began her career in Rochester, New York. Throughout her career she’s held leadership roles in several markets, including Detroit, Michigan, and Fort Myers, Florida. Most recently, she led advertising at FLORIDA TODAY in Brevard County as well as at Gannett’s three Treasure Coast properties.

The 19th has hired Julia

B. Chan as its next editor-in-chief. Chan, an industry leader who says she is “committed to exploring gender experiences and inequalities in America in ways that engage audiences, inspire action and hold the powerful accountable,” was most recently the managing editor of digital at KQED in the Bay Area. Hilary Dorsey has been promoted to editor of The News Guard in Lincoln

City, Oregon. She has been with Country Media, Inc. for two-and-a-half years as a reporter at the Headlight Herald in Tillamook. Dorsey received her Bachelor of Science degree in journalism from the University of Oregon in December 2018. After graduating, she took a remote internship for the San Francisco News before joining Country Media, Inc.

Malik Abdullah has been named vice president of product with NPR. This digital media role is responsible for the strategic vision, execution and impact for NPR products and services across web, mobile, voice and emerging digital platforms and is a member of NPR’S Leadership Team. Abdullah had been serving in this role in an acting capacity since September 2021.

Krys Fluker, who spent the last 27 years of her career at The Daytona Beach (Florida) News-journal, mostly in the Opinion department, has been named Opinion editor of the Orlando Sentinel. In a column to readers, she wrote: “I’ll be taking the reins of the Opinion pages from Mike Lafferty — who tells us he’s retiring for good this

time. He carried on the Sentinel’s grand tradition of strong, vibrant editorials that help shape the community’s agenda, leavened with a mix of columns that offer diverse perspectives from national and state leaders and cartoons that add some zing.”

Dr. Jon Hess has been named the next director of the School of Communication Studies at the College of Communication and Information at the University of Tennessee-knoxville, effective July 1. Hess currently serves as associate dean for faculty scholarship, internationalization and inclusive excellence in the College of Arts and Sciences and professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Dayton.

The Newmark Graduate School of Journalism has hired Channing

Gerard Joseph as its first-ever associate professor focused on race and identity. Joseph has spent more than two decades writing and editing about issues of race, queer identity, inequality and social justice for organizations such as The Nation, The Associated Press, The New York Times and SF Weekly, where he became the editorin-chief in 2016. For the last four years, he has been a lecturer at USC’S Annenberg School. David Trinko, managing editor of

Rick Starks, president and chief operating officer of AIM Media Midwest, the owner of The Lima News, and chairman and CEO Jeremy L. Halbreich. Trinko succeeds the paper’s previous editor, Jim Krumel, who retired Dec. 31 after 28 years with the newspaper, the last 20 as editor.

Schurz Communications, Inc. has promoted Chris Dautel to the position of vice president of strategic planning and corporate development. Dautel has been with Schurz for 15 years and has excelled in multiple roles and capacities. His promotion reflects the increased responsibilities needed as the company continues to grow its footprint in Broadband, Managed Cloud Services and other investments. Dautel will be the point person for mergers and acquisitions, valuation analysis, investments, strategic planning and real estate administration.

Pete Bland, a veteran reporter and editor with decades of experience in the industry, is now the sports editor for the Columbia Missourian, the Missouri School of Journalism’s digital-first community newsroom. As sports editor, Bland will manage the entire team of reporters, producers and technical crew that create the newsroom’s sports coverage while helping steer the direction of the School’s sports classes. He also will lead programs that blend education and hands-on experience for students.

Ron Rodgers, former University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications journalism associate professor and Journalism Department graduate coordinator, has been granted emeritus status by UF Provost Joseph Glover. Rodgers retired after 16 years at the college.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has stepped down as chief of the social media company, and Parag Agrawal,

Twitter’s chief technology officer, took over the helm. Dorsey was serving as both the CEO of Twitter and Square, his digital payments company, and will remain a member of the board until his term expires at the 2022 meeting of stockholders. Salesforce President and COO Bret Taylor will become the chairman of the board, succeeding

Patrick Pichette, a former Google executive, who will remain on the board as chair of the audit committee.

George Papajohn has been selected as editor of Propublica’s Chicagobased Midwest newsroom. Papajohn will work with Deputy Midwest Editor

Steve Mills to lead the accomplished reporting team to investigate stories in Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Missouri, Minnesota and possibly other states.

Iris Lee has been promoted to assistant editor for news applications at the

Los Angeles Times. In this newly created position, Lee will lead the development of data-driven projects like the paper’s wildfires map, Quakebot and live election results. She’ll also look to mine the data gathered by the paper’s apps for enterprise work.

Catherine Staub has been named as the next dean of the Drake University School of Journalism and Mass Communication in Des Moines, Iowa, effective July 1. Staub currently serves as associate professor, Peggy Fisher and Larry Stelter Chair of Magazine Journalism, and director of the E.T. Meredith Center for Magazine Studies at Drake University. Staub will succeed

Kathleen Richardson, who has served as dean of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication since 2014 and will retire at the end of June.

Jay Scott has been named president and advertising director of Napa Valley Publishing, which publishes the Napa Valley Register, St. Helena Star and Weekly Calistogan, in addition to a number of magazines and websites. He replaces previous President Davis

Taylor, who retired in August. Scott comes to the company from Adtaxi, a national digital marketing agency.

Andrew Julien, editor-in-chief and publisher of The Hartford (Connecticut) Courant, has been appointed executive editor of the New York Daily News. He has been overseeing the Daily News editorial department on an interim basis since September.

Longtime state government reporter

Jack Brammer, who has covered 10 Kentucky governors, retired at the end of 2021. Brammer, 70, has worked for Lexington newspapers since 1978, first at the Lexington Leader and then the Herald-leader when the papers merged in 1983. Brian Cleveland has been named deputy multiplatform editing chief for The Washington Post.

He will help lead a team of more than 65 copy editors who are responsible for the vast majority of the paper’s newsroom content, as well as the News Service. During his almost decade at The Post, Cleveland has pushed the MPE desk to adopt streamlined workflows and technology.

Executive Editor Julie Pace has announced three key additions to The Associated Press news leadership team.

Paul Haven will serve as vice president and head of global news gathering. In this new position, he will launch the daily news report across all formats, with a focus on identifying and elevating the day’s top stories. Derl Mccrudden takes on the new role of vice president and head of global news production, overseeing the output and production of AP’S daily news report across all formats. Finally, Michael Giarrusso will serve as deputy head of global news gathering for global beats, reporting to Haven, and overseeing teams covering sports, entertainment, health and science, business and religion. Jim Ferolie has been named regional executive editor of APG Media of

Southern Wisconsin. The position was most recently staffed by Sid Schwartz, who retired in April. A native of Rockford, Illinois, Ferolie comes to APG after spending more than half his career leading news teams in small community papers in the Madison suburbs under both Woodward Communications Inc. and O’rourke Media Group.

Scott Green has returned to Wick Communications as Wick production manager. Green also will serve as lead pressman at the Sierra Vista (Arizona) Herald. Green returns to Wick Communications from Swift Media Group, where he implemented many new processes at Colorado Mountain News Media.

Calmatters publisher and COO

Marcia Parker has been named chair of the Institute for Nonprofit News board of directors. She takes the helm from Laura Frank, who moves to an emeritus director position as past-chair. Frank is executive director of COLAB, the Colorado News Collaborative and is past vice president and president & general manager for news at Rocky Mountain PBS. The INN board also ratified the election of four member representatives as directors:

Kyra Kyles, CEO of the national youth-focused news organization YR Media, and Kelsey Ryan, founder and publisher of The Beacon, covering communities in Missouri and Kansas, were newly elected to three-year terms. Members re-elected representative directors Sheila Krumholz, the executive director of Opensecrets, and

Ron Smith, editor/program director of Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service.

Madison Walls has been promoted to design editor at The Washington Post. She has worked as the lead designer on some of The Post’s most ambitious digital projects over the past four years and, in 2020, she was a key player on the paper’s cross-functional elections team. 
