The Daily Item of Sunbury, Pennsylvania, has promoted managing editor William B.

Bowman to editor of the newspaper, Publisher Fred Scheller announced. Bowman, 46, succeeds Dennis Lyons, who is moving to Charlotte, North Carolina, in his new, full-time role as vice president-national editor of CNHI, LLC, parent company of The Daily Item. Bowman also will serve as editor of the paper’s affiliated weekly newspaper, The Danville News.

James Briggs has been promoted to general manager of the Star Beacon in Ashtabula, New York. Briggs will retain his position as the newspaper’s advertising director and was also named the advertising director of the Meadville Tribune in Pennsylvania, another paper owned by Star Beacon parent company CNHI.

In addition to James Briggs’ appointment at The Meadville Tribune,

Devon Stout has been named general manager of the Meadville paper.

Ken Harding has been appointed senior vice president of business effectiveness for Hearst Newspapers. Previously, Harding served as senior managing director at FTI Consulting.

The 157-year-old San Francisco (California) Examiner has tapped a new leader for its growth and transformation online. James A. Green has been named president of Clint Reilly Communications, which owns The San Francisco Examiner and Nob Hill Gazette. Green was most recently the vice president for digital at Lee Enterprises.

Janelle Bitker, a key member of the San Francisco Chronicle’s Food & Wine team for the past three years, has become the team leader as senior editor for Food & Wine.

Robert Cairns, managing editor of The Daily Star in Oneonta, New York, has been promoted to editor of the paper, Publisher Fred Scheller announced. Cairns succeeds Denielle Cazzolla, who recently resigned after a 24-year career with the paper.

Bob Sorokanich has been named to the role of editor in chief of Jalopnik, one of the world’s largest sites covering the automotive space. Sorokanich will lead a dynamic team, overseeing all content creation and original reporting across the outlet.

ESPN has retained its high-profile NFL and NBA insiders after a push from sports gambling companies to poach them away. The network announced that it has signed multi-year contract extensions with Adam Schefter and Adrian Wojnarowski. Ryan Ocenada has joined the San Francisco Chronicle’s audience team as associate editor. In his new role, Ocenada will help the newsroom expand its reach via search optimization, social media and emerging platforms. He joins the staff from Nbcuniversal, where he helped set search and social strategies as an audience development editor. He’s also worked in audience and editorial roles for the Golden State Warriors, Bleacher Report and Twitter.

Gina Chua, a top editor at Reuters, will become the executive editor of Semafor, a new media start-up helmed by Ben Smith and Justin Smith. Ben Smith will serve as editor in chief of the new outlet, with Chua reporting to him.

Pennylynn Webb has been named editor of the Palestine (Texas) Heraldpress, according to Publisher Jake Mienk. She will direct newsroom operations, oversee Palestine

Magazine, work to build digital content and strongly focus on community engagement. Webb has more than 15 years’ experience in the media industry, in roles such as reporter, photographer, editor and publisher. She has been with the Herald-press since 2015, beginning as a community reporter and serving several different roles as she climbed the ranks to editor.

Lee Enterprises has named Kelly Lecker the next executive editor of the Wisconsin State Journal. Lecker previously served as both the interim editor and the managing/investigative editor of the Columbus Dispatch in Columbus, Ohio. She succeeds

Jason Adrians, who in January was promoted to the position of vice president-local news for Lee Enterprises.

CBS News has hired Mick Mulvaney, who served as acting chief of staff during Donald Trump’s presidency, as a contributor. The network said that Mulvaney will provide political analysis “across the network’s broadcasts and platforms.”

The Associated Press has named Chrissie

Thompson as director of the Education Reporting Network. In this role, she will serve as the head of a new program designed to drive accountability reporting on the lasting impacts of the pandemic on education and lift local newsrooms’ abilities to reach their audiences with engaging education news, too.

Jesse Lewis has joined the San Francisco Chronicle newsroom as director of culture and operations. Lewis will oversee reporting teams dedicated to coverage of race and equity and the Bay Area’s post-pandemic transformation, as well as leading newsroom operations. A veteran journalist, Lewis comes to The Chronicle from The Washington Post, where he worked since 2011.

Bill Evans, publisher of The Paducah Sun, has announced the promotions of two Sun reporters to fill open editor roles. David Zoeller has been named The Sun’s managing editor, and Kelly

Farrell has been named The Sun’s assistant news editor.

Meera Selva, currently director of the Journalism Fellowship Programme and deputy director at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, has been appointed as the new CEO of Internews Europe, one of the most important non-profits supporting independent journalism and news media across the world. She will take up her new role in June.

The San Francisco Chronicle has hired

Sophia Bollag as a reporter covering the governor, California Capitol and state politics from Sacramento. Bollag has covered California politics and government from Sacramento for five years, and most recently covered Gov. Gavin Newsom’s administration for the Sacramento Bee.

Charlie Munger, the 98-year-old business partner of Warren Buffett at Berkshire Hathaway Inc., has given up his role as chairman of Daily Journal Corp, a newspaper publisher and provider of software to courthouses. Munger, who had chaired Los Angelesbased Daily Journal since 1977, will remain a director and focus on matters he has worked on, including its securities portfolio.

Lee Enterprises, which owns the Tulsa World, has meteorologists serving its readers in Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, Virginia and now Oklahoma, with

Kirsten Lang. Together they will collaborate and share content about the most relevant weather topics. Lang is the first meteorologist in the Tulsa World’s 116-year history.

Chris Faulkner has been telling the stories of area athletes and residents for 41 years on behalf of the Fort Madison Daily Democrat in Iowa. That came to an end March 31 when the longtime writer/photographer retired.

The North Platte Telegraph’s managing editor since 2016, has been named to manage the newsrooms of three additional

Lee Enterprises newspapers, as Lee’s western Nebraska editor. She will continue to live in North Platte and run the Telegraph newsroom while also overseeing the news staffs of the Scottsbluff Star-herald, Gering Courier and Hemingford Ledger.

Paul Goodsell, a 41-year veteran local reporter and editor, has been named editor-in-chief of the Omaha (Nebraska) World-herald. Goodsell, 62, has been the newspaper’s managing editor since 2017. In addition, Courtney Brummerclark was named the newspaper’s managing editor. She had been the features and special sections editor for The World-herald since June 2020.

The Paris (Texas) News has hired its next managing editor to lead its newsroom operations. Sports editor

Tommy Culkin has been named to the spot, succeeding former managing editor Klark Byrd, who is leaving the newspaper for a position in Wyoming. Culkin has been a member of the paper’s editorial staff since October 2018, and has served as the sports editor since early 2020.

Nexstar Media Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Nexstar Media Group, Inc., has appointed Klarn Depalma as senior vice president of group sales and sponsorships, responsible for the strategy, development, and execution of sales and sponsorship efforts across Nexstar’s entire portfolio of broadcast stations and associated digital properties.

The Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications has announced new leaders for its programs in Washington, D.C., as well as a new faculty member to work with Chicago high school teachers and students. Elizabeth Shogren will join Medill this spring as an associate professor and will lead the graduate journalism Politics, Policy and Foreign Affairs specialization in Washington, D.C. Ivan Meyers has been promoted to senior lecturer and will serve as director of operations at Medill D.C.

Michael Spikes will join Medill as a lecturer and curriculum specialist for the Teach for Chicago Journalism Program. He also will teach at Medill.

Terrie Baker, president of The

Grand Island Independent, Kearney Hub and Lexington Clipper-herald in Nebraska — published by Lee Enterprises — recently joined Syndicate Publishing as Coo/regional publisher. Baker brings a wealth of knowledge from her more than 40 years of experience with News Media Company, BH Media and recently Lee Enterprises. She will play a crucial role in heading up the Syndicates’ four weekly newspapers in Nebraska. Barb Pettie has begun a new position as group publisher at Black Press Media. John Boynton, the former president and CEO of Torstar, as well as the

publisher of the Toronto Star, has left the company to take over the role of president and CEO of Arterra Wines.

Bustamante will become associate dean of diversity, equity and inclusion at the Moody College of Communication at the University of Texas at Austin in the fall.
