Erika Allen has been named the new head of audience strategy and growth at The Washington Post. She joins the staff from Vice Media Group, where she has held a variety of roles, and most recently served as senior director of global news operations.

Sandhya Somashekhar has joined the Business Desk at The Washington Post as an assignment editor running a new team covering the business of health, food and climate, where she will grapple with some of the issues and industries most vital to the future of humanity. For the past year, Somashekhar has been an assignment editor on Outlook, developing ideas for coverage, recruiting authors and editing stories on topics such as the pandemic and the war in Afghanistan.

Susan Levine has agreed to take on an interim role as deputy foreign editor of The Washington Post. She will remain in the role until a permanent deputy is in place. For the duration of her work on Foreign, Carrie Camillo, the deputy Talent Network editor, will lead the Post’s freelance system and handle newsroom editors’ deployment of reporters for all breaking news and enterprise needs.

Matt Callahan has been promoted to deputy design director for The Washington Post. He has been a vital member of the Design Department leadership team since becoming an editor in 2017.

Josh Peters has been named head of global commercial data strategy, partnerships and governance for Client Solutions. In this role, he will be responsible for driving The Post’s consumer data strategy with a focus on the direct sold ad business, data partnerships and identity resolution.

The Washington Post has announced that Mariana Alfaro has taken on a new role as co-anchor of Post Politics Now, a new live analysis approach to political coverage. She is leading Post Politics Now during the afternoon and evening hours each weekday, partnering with fellow co-anchor John Wagner, who hosts the live file starting each morning.

Isaac Arnsdorf has joined The Washington Post as a national political reporter. He will cover former president Donald Trump, his “Make America Great Again” political movement and the broad constellation of elected officials, activists, donors and media figures on the right who are powering the Republican Party.

Tara Parker-pope has joined The Washington Post as the editor of a new Wellness Department, hiring a staff of more than 15 journalists and working with colleagues across The Post to create and build out this important coverage area.

Shauna Little has joined the Client Solutions team at The Washington Post as vice president of marketing. She will oversee teams including Product and Solutions Marketing, B2B events and The Washington Post Creative Group. Most recently, Little served as vice president of Digital Integrated Marketing at Paramount Global, where she was responsible for partnering with digital sales, video product leadership and product marketing to deliver client strategies that drove digital revenue.

Matthew Brown is joining The Washington Post as a Georgia-based reporter for its new Democracy Team. He will be tasked with covering a state at the center of the national debate over access to the polls and the health of America’s democratic system. He will document the impact of Georgia’s new voting law while exploring the dynamics of an increasingly diverse

electorate in one of the country’s most closely contested political battlegrounds.

Allison Cho, who joined the Multiplatform Desk on a part-time basis after being selected as part of the would-be intern class of 2020, has been promoted to a full-time copy editor at The Washington Post. Jacqueline Alemany is taking on a new position as congressional investigations reporter with The Washington Post. In her new role, she will pursue revelatory stories about how Congress uses its oversight power and expansive pieces about the people and entities that come under congressional scrutiny.

The Washington Post has announced the leadership team for its new Climate & Environment Department. Zachary Goldfarb, previously The Post’s deputy business editor, has moved to Climate as department head. Juliet

Eilperin, an award-winning leader in environmental journalism, will serve as Climate’s deputy department head.

Monica Ulmanu also has moved to the department as Climate’s first visual enterprise editor, leading a team of five journalists who will conceive and drive timely and penetrating visual storytelling about the climate crisis.

Peter Wallsten is taking on an expansive new portfolio as Senior National Investigations Editor with The Washington Post. In this role, he will spearhead ambitious investigative pieces across the National staff, working with other editors and reporters to produce revelatory journalism on the most urgent topics of the day.

Alexis Arnold has joined the Design Department as a news designer with The Washington Post. She comes to The Post from USA Today, where she started out as a visuals fellow, creating motion graphics and explainers for the video team, before moving to the audience team.

Evan Halper is joining The Washington Post Business Desk to cover energy, a critical beat as the war in Ukraine roils global oil markets and galvanizes the effort to shift society away from fossil fuels.

Jill Martin has joined The Washington Post as a multiplatform editor on the news copy desk, where she will be responsible for copy editing the Weekend section.

Sommer Mathis is joining The Washington Post as senior editor for newsroom recruiting, where she will

Lisa Ryan Howard, senior vice president and media general manager, The New York Times and publisher of T: The New York Times Style Magazine, has been promoted to global head of New York Times Advertising.

The Metro team at The New York Times has announced the hiring of Stephen Merelman to be the new criminal justice editor. He joins the paper from Bloomberg, where he worked for nearly 12 years as a senior editor for enterprise, the national editor and a team leader for state and local coverage.

The New York Times’ next United Nations bureau chief is Farnaz Fassihi, who will also help cover Iran.

Rebecca Chao is joining the Metro desk as a senior staff editor with The New York Times. She joins the staff from Flex, where she embedded on more than a dozen desks.

Robert Gebeloff, who has worked as a data journalism specialist for The New York Times since 2008, will be embedded with the National desk this year to work on data projects. Anna Dubenko has been promoted to director of audience overseeing newsroom audience as a department head at The New York Times.

Noreen Malone is joining The New York Times desk as enterprise editor. She joins The Times most recently from Slate, where she wrote and hosted a season of Slow Burn on the origins of the Iraq War (which The Guardian named one of its top podcasts of 2021).

Jaspal Riyait is being promoted to senior staff editor for the digital news design team at The New York Times.

The New York Times has announced that David Wallace-wells has joined Times Opinion, where he will be launching a weekly newsletter covering climate change, technology, the future of the planet and how we live on it. He’ll also have a role at the magazine, where he’ll be a staff writer, contributing a regular column and expansive featurelength stories.

Jennie Coughlin has joined Metro at The New York Times as the desk’s first full-time audience editor.

Lillian Chen has joined the audience team at The New York Times as International deputy. In addition to partnering with senior leadership on all aspects of the paper’s international strategy, she will hone the newsroom’s international audience operation, building up the team so the paper can pursue even more ambitious international goals. She has been with The Times since 2018.

Catherine Pearson has joined Well as a reporter covering relationships. She joins the staff from Huffpost, where she’s spent 11 years covering personal health, wellness and parenting with a service bent.

Elian Peltier is taking his next step in growing his career at The New York Times: He recently started in his new role as a West Africa correspondent based in Dakar, Senegal, where he will work closely with the bureau chief, Ruth Maclean.

Nico Grant and Tripp Mickle are joining The New York Times as tech reporters in San Francisco.
