New hires, promotions and relocations across the industry .....

Cox Enterprises has named Suzanne Klopfenstein as publisher of Cox First Media, which includes the Dayton (Ohio) Daily News, the Springfield News-sun, the Journal news and Dayton.com. She will assume her new role on Jan. 1, when publisher Jana Collier retires.

Terri Hale has been named publisher of The Registerherald in Beckley, West Virginia, along with the state’s two other CNHI newspapers, the Bluefield Daily Telegraph and the Times West Virginian in Fairmont. Last year, Hale was named general manager of the three West Virginia papers by Fred Scheller, CNHI regional executive and publisher of the Daily Item in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, who made the announcement about her promotion during a site visit to Beckley.

Jim Hart has been named publisher of The Herald-whig in Quincy, Illinois. He succeeds Ron Wallace who left The Herald-whig in August. As regional publisher for Phillips Media Group, the parent company of The Herald-whig, Hart also will oversee The Hannibal Courier Post and the Kirksville Daily Express. Prior to joining Phillips Media, Hart served as vice president and regional publisher of Lakeway Publishers, Inc.

Longtime Press-republican stalwart Lamiaa Aly has been promoted to publisher of the Plattsburgh, New York, newspaper. Aly rises to the position of publisher after serving as general manager for 15 months.

Cheryl Phillips has been promoted to publisher of the Niagara Gazette and Lockport Union Sun & Journal in New York. Phillips had been serving as general manager of both papers and the Tonawanda print site. She will still report to Regional Publisher and CNHI Regional Executive John Celestino, who is now overseeing all four CNHI newspaper operations in New York state as well as CNHI newspapers in North of Boston and New Hampshire.

AIM Media Indiana LLC has appointed Richard Clark as publisher at The Republic in Columbus, Indiana, and as vice president and group publisher with responsibility for all AIM Media properties in Indiana. He succeeds Bud Hunt, who retired. As VP and group publisher, Clark will be responsible for the daily newspapers in Columbus, Franklin, Greenfield and Seymour; weekly newspapers in Nashville, Brownstown, Pendleton, New Palestine and Fortville-mccordsville; Digitalaim, the digital marketing services operation; a magazine and special publications division; and all affiliated websites and digital assets.

In a column to readers, Lance Winter said he walked out the doors at the Daily Record in San Marcos, Texas, as its publisher for the last time in November “not because I’m heading to another newspaper, but because my time in this industry is over.” He added,

“I have no regrets as I close out this chapter of my life. I just hope you keep reading the Daily Record. It’s 110 years old. Treat it with care.”

Mike Hrycko is happy to be back home in the Midwest. Hrycko moved from near the shores of the Pacific Ocean to the fresh coast of Lake Michigan as he was named publisher of the Ludington (Michigan) Daily News, Oceana’s Herald-journal and White Lake Beacon.

Rick Thomason, publisher of the Johnson City (Tennessee) Press, bid a fond farewell to readers recently, writing in a column that his time “at the helm of this ship” had come to an end. “It admittedly isn’t without some sadness. But blanketing that sadness is a whole lot of real joy and satisfaction.”

Vtdigger has promoted Paul Heintz and Maggie Cassidy to its top newsroom positions. Heintz will serve as editor-in-chief and Cassidy as managing editor. In those positions, Heintz and Cassidy will lead Vermont’s largest newsroom, which includes 24 reporters, photographers and editors — and serves more than 600,000 readers each month. The moves are part of a leadership transition that began in May, when Vtdigger founder Anne Galloway stepped back from her roles as editor-in-chief of the online news outlet and executive director of its nonprofit parent

organization, the Vermont Journalism Trust. She is now editor-at-large.

The board of Agence France-presse has re-elected with a wide majority AFP Chairman and Chief Executive Fabrice Fries for a second five-year mandate. The board announced its decision after auditioning Fries about his strategic plans for the agency and the significant turnaround in the agency’s finances since 2018.

Amanda Barrett, who was vice president and head of news audience for The Associated Press, is now AP’S vice president of standards and inclusion. She reports to Executive Editor Julie Pace in this senior leadership position, ensuring that standards have a role in AP’S most important news decisions. Pace said, “She’ll also lead an effort to build out our standards team so we have more internal resources and more opportunities to lead external standards discussions in the media industry and with the public.”

The Inland Press Foundation has elected Joyce Mccullough, former president of Illinois-based Miller Group Media, as the foundation’s new president. Mccullough, who has served as a board member for both the foundation and the former Inland Press Association, was elected at the foundation’s fall meeting. The foundation met in conjunction with the America’s Newspapers Senior Leadership Conference in New Orleans. The foundation elected David Holgate vice president. Holgate is Indiana Michigan group president for Paxton Media Group. Marcus Wilson becomes foundation chairman, after serving as president for two years. Wilson is a long time executive with Townnews, currently serving as chairman emeritus. The foundation also elected Tom Slaughter treasurer and secretary. Inland also elected the following directors: Kristen Czaban, publisher of the Sheridan Press; Jeremy Halbreich, chairman and CEO of AIM Media Management; Nick Monico, COO of Adams Publishing Group; Camille Olson, partner at Seyfarth Shaw LLP; and James Sprung, former associate publisher of the Villages Daily Sun.

Marisa Porto and Michelle Laroche will join the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media faculty in January 2023, bolstering the school’s expertise in sustainable local news and business journalism. Porto — an entrepreneurial leader who has served in strategic roles with media, nonprofits, startups and higher education — expands the school’s commitment to local news as the John S. and James L. Knight Chair in Local News and Sustainability. Laroche — an educator with deep journalism experience at leading business and financial news outlets — builds the school’s strength in business journalism as its Hussman Professor of Business Journalism.

The Local Media Consortium, a strategic alliance of local media companies, has re-elected Jay Horton, WEHCO Media, Inc., and newly elected Beth Bowers, The Atlanta Journal-constitution, and Chris Fehrmann, TEGNA, to join its executive board. The LMC executive board is composed of nine elected and three board-appointed members with digital expertise from a diverse mix of local media companies. All terms take effect on Jan. 1, with each elected board member serving a three-year term.

Members of the Institute for Nonprofit News elected two leaders to represent them on INN’S board of directors. Valeria Fernández is the managing editor of palabra., a multimedia platform that aims to provide an accurate and honest representation of the Latino community by publishing stories from freelance journalists who are members of the National Hispanic Journalists Association. Lucas Grindley is the executive director of Next City, which leverages solutions-based journalism to spread workable ideas from one city to the next with the vision of reimagining cities as places of economic, environmental and racial justice.

Alexandria Bursiek Kloehn is the new Buzz reporter at the Appleton Post-crescent in Wisconsin. Most recently, she worked as the Streetwise reporter for the Green Bay Pressgazette, covering similar topics as The Buzz.

Yasmin Tayag has joined The Atlantic’s editorial team, where she is now a staff writer. Damon Beres also recently joined The Atlantic’s editorial staff, as a senior editor focused on technology coverage.

Eric Freeman, a veteran of the newspaper industry, recently joined the staff of The Missourian (Washington, Missouri) as director of circulation. Most recently, Freeman worked as the distribution manager for Mcbride and Fillner, an Illinois newspaper and magazine delivery provider. Also joining The Missourian’s circulation department is Julia Roellig, a native of Washington, who will serve as circulation/promotions assistant.

The Marshall Project, the Pulitzer-winning nonprofit media organization covering criminal justice, has hired its first-ever director of careers and culture: Emma Carew Grovum. She is the founder of Kimbap Media, a consultancy solving problems at the intersection of journalism, technology and audience. Carew Grovum will develop and execute a strategy to identify, recruit and communicate with future Marshall Project employees. She will join the team of Chief Strategy Officer Ebony Reed, working closely with the human resources team and managers to enhance existing onboarding experiences for new hires. She also will oversee professional development, which includes surveying staff for internal feedback, planning national and regional staff retreats, and DEI programming.

Ashir Badami will join Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications in January as a senior lecturer. Badami will teach graduate journalism students in the Media Innovation and Content Strategy specialization and lead the specialization starting in summer quarter. Over the next year and half, Badami will work closely with Professor Rich Gordon, who has directed Medill’s MSJ track in digital publishing for almost 23 years. Gordon plans to retire in 2024.

New Haven (Connecticut) Independent Managing Editor Tom Breen is stepping into the top editor role at the nonprofit online daily news outlet. He began writing for the Independent in 2015. He will oversee the assigning, editing and publishing of all Independent stories on a daily basis.

The Boston Globe has hired a new Washington bureau chief — Jackie Kucinich, who previously held that position at The Daily Beast. Kucinich replaces Liz Goodwin, who left the

Globe during the summer in order to cover Congress for The Washington Post. Before starting at the Beast in 2014, Kucinich worked for The Post, USA TODAY, Roll Call and The Hill, and is a regular contributor to CNN.

Pam Mathes has been promoted to general manager of O’rourke Media Group’s holdings in Wisconsin. She had been the director of sales operations for O’rourke Media Group. In Wisconsin, OMG operates the Tri-county News, Tempo and Verve women’s magazine in Kiel; the Sheboygan Sun, Ripon Express, Ripon Commonwealth Press, Great Dane Shopping News (Madison), Verona Press, Oregon Observer, Stoughton Courier Hub and Fitchburg Star. In her newly appointed role, Mathes will direct employees working in the business office, graphic design and sales to drive revenue, standardize processes and improve efficiency with all business activity.

Brad Schwartz has been named president of CW Entertainment, responsible for programming strategy, creative and brand development, and day-to-day operations of The CW Network, America’s fifth national television network. Schwartz spearheaded the highly-successful award-winning re-brand of the TV Guide Network to Pop TV. As president of the network, Schwartz oversaw both creative and business operations, and the Pop TV team grew audience and revenue for six consecutive years.

The CW Network LLC has named Beth Feldman as senior vice president of Network Communication, overseeing internal and external communication and program publicity. For the past 15 years, Feldman has served as a partner at Beyond PR Group, developing and executing successful digital media and influencer activation campaigns on behalf of more than a dozen television series and syndicated talk shows from major television networks.

Postmedia Network Canada Corp. has appointed Mary Anne Lavallee executive vice president, chief financial officer and chief transformation officer. Lavallee previously was executive vice president, chief operating officer and interim chief financial officer.

Lori Kaplan has been promoted to vice president, Audience Insights, with NPR. In this new role, Kaplan will lead the Audience Insights team in its efforts to learn more about NPR’S current audience, how to reach new audiences, and the ways NPR makes an impact on the public.

Hearst has announced that Atefeh “Atti” Riazi has been named chief information officer. She most recently served as senior vice president and chief information officer/interim chief digital officer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Charles Odom has been named senior vice president of corporate finance and treasurer with Cox Enterprises. He joined Cox in 1996 and most recently served as vice president and treasurer, where he managed capital markets and treasury operations functions; oversaw its capital structure and capital-raising activities, including bond issuance, bank financing and securitizations; and managed the delivery of treasury operations services.

Society for Science has named Michael Gordon Voss as the new publisher of Science News Media Group, which includes Science News and Science News Explores. In this role, Voss will be the senior executive responsible for the leadership of the media group’s business strategy and operations. Voss, who will start his new position on Jan. 9, also will be a critical member of the Society for Science executive leadership team, the nonprofit organization that publishes Science News and Science News Explores. Previously, he was publisher of Stanford Social Innovation Review at Stanford University and co-led the organization with the publication’s editor-in-chief.

The Wall Street Journal has announced several moves in the Hub – around how the paper manages its digital day, deepens engagement with its audience and drives growth. Darren Everson was named chief digital editor. Gráinne Mccarthy was named chief digital editor, International. She will remain based in London, where the London Hub team will report to her. Phil Izzo was named head of audience engagement and Jennifer Hicks was appointed head of audience growth.

Michelle Robinson has joined The Daily News, Galveston, Texas, as chief revenue director. She will oversee print and digital advertising efforts for the newspaper. Leonard Woolsey, president of Southern Newspapers Inc. and publisher of The Daily News, said: “She will be a tremendous addition to our team.”

Jonathan Martin has returned to POLITICO as politics bureau chief and a senior political columnist. Martin was among the publication’s first hires, late in 2006, and the announcement of his appointment by Executive Editor Dafna Linzer notes that he “quickly became a must follow, covering elections in every corner of the country with insight and authority. His knowledge, his humor, his competitiveness — all these made him a POLITICO original for the first eight years of our history.” She added, “What made him stand out then is what made him indispensable later at The New York Times.”

The Alliance for Audited Media, a not-forprofit media auditing organization, has named two longtime media, marketing and client solutions professionals to senior leadership roles. AAM promoted Kristina Meinig to vice president of market development. In her new role, Meinig will leverage a strong background in product development, client relations and digital media to bring greater awareness to AAM’S digital assurance solutions. Danielle O’connell joins AAM as vice president of client solutions where she oversees magazine media, B2b/farm media and the growing point-of-care media channel, as well as working with AAM’S agency partners. She is working alongside industry veteran George Bartman before he retires at the end of the year.

Niketa Patel, a digital journalist with over 19 years of experience in audience development, partnerships and product, has been named senior director of leadership programs at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY.

Donna Kalajian Lagani has been named vice president and Eastern director of the William Randolph Hearst Foundation of California and the Hearst Foundation, Inc. of New York, succeeding George B. Irish who passed away on Sept. 13 after serving 14 years in that position. She joined the Hearst Foundations in 2019 as senior program officer after nearly 25 years at Hearst Magazines.

Janelle O’dea has joined the Center for Public Integrity in a newly created data reporter position focused on local news collaborations and capacity-building. She joins Public Integrity from the St. Louis Post-dispatch, where she was a data reporter for five years. There, she combined the subject-matter expertise of her fellow reporters with data analysis and programming to dig deeper into stories and subjects.

Erin Orr, deputy director of Investigate Midwest, has been named as executive director. Since May of this year, Orr has overseen day-to-day operations and newsroom production. She brings more than 30 years of editorial and administrative experience to the role. Orr replaces Pam Dempsey, who has since relocated to Arizona after a decade of service during which she helped build Investigate Midwest into a robust and nationally recognized newsroom.

Mark Kneer, longtime circulation director of the Southeast Missourian in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, has retired. Kneer’s service with the Missourian began in 1993. Besides circulation manager, for more than two decades Kneer was building manager of the newspaper’s historic headquarters, where he was instrumental in its rehabilitation in 2005-2006. He also served several years as general manager of the Southeast Missourian.

Pressreader has appointed Ruairí Doyle as chief executive officer. Cofounder and former CEO Alexander Kroogman has transitioned to the role of executive director and member of the board of directors. Doyle joined Pressreader five years ago and initially served as the general manager and R&D lead at Pressreader’s Irish office. He then relocated to Vancouver, Canada, as the vice president of product, and most recently worked as the senior vice president of product and operations.

Amanda Wills has been named head of video with The Wall Street Journal newsroom. She joins the Journal after six years at CNN, where she rose through various leadership positions, including executive producer of breaking news for CNN Digital, to become vice president of content programming for CNN+.

Eli Stokols has joined POLITICO’S White House team, where he will help helm the West Wing Playbook newsletter. He already has some familiarity with POLITICO. He covered the 2016 election for POLITICO, starting out

with the Jeb Bush campaign before turning his reporting lens on Donald Trump. He’s covered the White House ever since Trump took office in 2017. For the last four and a half years, that’s been at the Los Angeles Times, his hometown paper.

POLITICO has announced that Rachel Loeffler has been named executive vice president and general manager, professional business. In this role, she will be responsible for managing and developing the professional products and B2B subscription services offered by POLITICO, including POLITICO Pro, E&E News and Agency IQ. Loeffler comes to POLITICO from Reorg — a global provider of credit intelligence, data and analytics — where she served as the organization’s chief product officer.

Sara Fischer has joined CNN as an on-air contributor on the media beat. As Axios’ media reporter for the last six years, Fischer brings a deep understanding of the business behind the media industry and all that entails. She will continue to oversee Axios’ media coverage, including writing her weekly newsletter, and now is reporting on air for CNN in the areas of corporate media, technology, deals, entertainment, media regulation and consumer habits.

Xochitl Hinojosa has joined CNN as an on-air commentator focusing on national politics. Hinojosa comes to CNN with more than a decade worth of experience in communications and politics. Her extensive political background includes serving as senior adviser and communications director for the Democratic National Committee.

CNN Digital Worldwide has appointed Matt Wells as the new executive editor for Europe, Middle East and Africa, based in London. He takes on responsibility for coverage of the region across CNN’S global digital platforms, overseeing breaking news, features and enterprise journalism. Prior to this role, Wells was the international director of Global Programming and Alerting for CNN Digital Worldwide, overseeing digital output across all of CNN’S international digital platforms.

Athan Stephanopoulos has been named EVP and chief digital officer of CNN Worldwide, reporting to CNN Chairman and CEO Chris Licht. In this role, Stephanopoulos will oversee the digital worldwide business, including editorial, product, technology, business operations and innovation strategies. He joins CNN after more than eight years at Nowthis, where he served as president and led the brand to become one of the largest and fastest growing digital news outlets for a young Gen Z and Millennial audience.

Veronica Miracle has joined CNN as a correspondent based in San Francisco. Miracle joined CNN from KABC in Los Angeles, California, where she anchored weekend evening newscasts and reported special projects and enterprise stories.

Faith Stafford has joined the design department as senior deputy design director for features at the Los Angeles Times. She will work closely with the design director and creative director to implement new workflows while elevating the paper’s design and brand expression across platforms. She recently served as the deputy design director at Entertainment Weekly, where she helped lead the art department and designed all aspects of the magazine.

Gail Marshall has been promoted to administrative director at the Los Angeles Times. She joined The Times as assistant to the executive editor and to the general counsel in 2018 and soon after was focused full time on the newsroom. In this new management role, she will continue working with Executive Editor Kevin Merida and the managing editors and will oversee the El Segundo-based department administrators who support the newsroom.

Angeline Woo has joined the Los Angeles Times as the photo editor for Food. In her role, she will help develop the editorial direction of The Times’ food photography and associated media. Woo started her career as an editorial photographer and creative director for food brands. She is a graduate of UC Irvine and the founder of El Ojo Agency and Founders + Food.

The Fast Break Desk at the Los Angeles Times has announced the addition of Amy Hubbard, who joins the breaking news operation as an assistant editor Dec. 12. She started at The Times in 1993 and, in 2015, took a four-year detour at Nerdwallet, where she further polished her SEO and personal finance skills as a lead editor on the small business and banking teams. She then returned to The Times on the morning copy desk and most recently was assistant editor of newsletters.

The Los Angeles Times has announced that Carol Cormaci has been named executive editor of the Daily Pilot. She will oversee the Times Community

News division in Orange County. She most recently served as managing editor of the Daily Pilot, where she operated the paper remotely during the pandemic.

Ed Guzman has joined the Los Angeles Times as deputy Sports editor. Guzman most recently served as deputy editor for sports for ESPN’S Andscape and joins The Times after stints at the Oregonian, The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Seattle Times.

Tyler R. Tynes has joined the Los Angeles Times as a sports culture critic. Tynes most recently worked at GQ magazine, where his profiles and interviews focused on the intersection of sports, fashion and activism as the first staff sportswriter in the magazine’s history.

The Fast Break Desk at the Los Angeles Times has announced the addition of Hugo Martín, who has joined the breaking news operation as an assistant editor. A graduate of the Minority Editorial Training Program, Martín has worked for The Times for more than 30 years, covering Los Angeles City Hall, transportation, travel, politics, outdoor recreation and business.

Raul Roa has joined the staff of the Los Angeles Times as a photo editor. Roa will oversee photography for Los Angeles Times en Español and the new Latino vertical. He joined Times Community News as a staff photographer in 2009 and became TCN photo editor in 2021. Earlier this year, he began editing and shooting for L.A. Times en Español.

Jason Sanchez has joined the Los Angeles Times staff on the Features copy desk. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communications with an emphasis in journalism from Cal State Fullerton in 2020. He first joined The Times as a Dow Jones News Fund intern in the summer of 2021. When he returned as an L.A. Times fellow last fall, he worked on the AM and Features copy desks and did a rotation with the Newsletters team.

Anna Fifield will return to The Washington Post on Jan. 3 to become the paper’s next Asia-pacific editor. She spent two decades as a foreign correspondent, first for the Financial Times and then at The Post, including stops in Sydney, Seoul, Beirut, Washington, Tokyo and Beijing, where she was China bureau chief until 2020. For the past two years, she has been editor of the Dominion Post, New Zealand’s capital city newspaper.

Julie Zauzmer Weil has joined the Business Desk at The Washington Post to pioneer a new line of coverage about taxes, to expose wrongdoing and inequities while helping readers better navigate the tax system for themselves. For the past five years, she has volunteered as an Irs-certified tax preparer at D.C.’S Community Tax Aid, completing tax returns for low-income residents.

Victoria Jaggard has joined The Washington Post’s Health and Science team as a deputy editor. She spent the past three years as executive editor for science at National Geographic, where she presided over its coverage of the coronavirus pandemic and other science matters.

Harry Stevens has joined the Climate & Environment department at The Washington Post as its first graphics columnist. He joined The Post in 2019 after an eclectic career in journalism, with stints as a blogger, reporter, data analyst and infographic designer.

Rivan Stinson has joined The Washington Post’s Business desk as assistant editor for personal finance, a newly created position. She joins the staff from Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, where she worked for more than six years, first as a fact-checker and then as a staff writer for its magazine covering credit, banking, insurance and other personal finance topics.

The Washington Post has named Kathy Baird chief communications officer, overseeing corporate communications, public relations, live events and brand marketing. Baird joins The Post from Nike where she served as the senior director of global communications.

Brianna Sacks has joined The Washington Post as an extreme weather and natural disasters reporter in the Climate & Environment

department. In this role, she will explore how climate change is transforming the United States through violent storms, intense heat, widespread wildfires and other forms of extreme weather. She joins The Post from the Daily Beast, where she was a senior reporter. Lateshia Beachum has joined Metro at The Washington Post to cover Prince George’s County government and politics. She joins Metro from the General Assignment desk.

Evelyn Larrubia has joined The Washington Post as investigative editor for technology and business, leading a team of reporters who deliver revelatory journalism about the influence of money and technology on our government and our world.

She joins the paper after three years as managing editor of investigations at the Markup, a nonprofit newsroom founded in 2018 to investigate how powerful institutions use technology to shape society.

Bryan Flaherty has been promoted to director of optimization and news product at The Washington Post. In this newly created leadership role, Flaherty will oversee the SEO and News Product departments under Curation and Platforms. For the past nine months, he has successfully led the newsroom’s search engine optimization efforts.

Michael Rosenwald has joined the Obituaries desk at The Washington Post as a reporter. He has been on book leave for the past year, working on an ambitious project on the virality of human behavior for Riverhead (Penguin Random House). He has been with The Post since 2004.

Niko Kommenda has joined the Climate & Environment department at The Washington Post as a graphics reporter. He previously worked with the Financial Times, as a reporter on the visual stories team.

Daniel Gilbert has joined The Washington Post to cover the business of medicine, a new beat exploring how pharmaceutical firms, health technology companies and medicaldevice makers are shaping the next generation of treatments, exerting influence in Washington and making their mark on consumers. He joins the staff from The Seattle Times, where he spent the last seven years as an investigative reporter specializing in medical and mental health care.

Tim Puko has joined The Washington Post as a climate correspondent covering politics and policy. In this key role, Puko will lead coverage of the Biden administration and write about how influential figures in Washington and around the world make decisions about climate and environmental policy. He joins the paper from The Wall Street Journal, where he has been reporting on energy and climate policy in Washington since 2017.

Maite Fernández Simon has joined the Business team at The Washington Post as audience strategy editor, a new leadership role that will help chart the trajectory of the paper’s expanding technology and business coverage. She has been with The Post since 2018 and most recently worked as a Breaking News reporter in Foreign as part of the newsroom’s Opportunity Year program.

Jillian Banner has joined The Washington Post as a social video producer for the Next Gen politics team. She previously worked with the Poynter Institute.

The New York Times has announced staff moves in Sports. James Wagner is moving to Mexico City for his new role as international sports correspondent, and Alan Blinder will shift his focus to golf and the intersection of sports and health.

The New York Times has announced that Ravi Mattu has joined Dealbook as managing editor, based in London, and Bernhard Warner has joined Dealbook as a senior editor, based in Rome. Mattu will help shepherd the next chapter of Dealbook’s 20-yearplus journey to break news and bring incisive insight to the world of finance and policy with its flagship newsletter and events. Warner will be part of the team editing the newsletter overnight, adding late-breaking news and updating the report before it is sent each morning, as well as writing longer pieces for Dealbook and beyond.

Jenna Russell has been named The New York Times’ New England bureau chief. She joins the staff from The Boston Globe, where she has worked for more than two decades as a projects reporter on the paper’s narrative team and its investigative Spotlight team; a beat reporter covering education; and a roving regional reporter filing stories from across New England. Most recently, she covered the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic in K–12 schools, with a focus on inequality.

Wordle now has a dedicated editor, just as the Crossword, Mini and Spelling Bee do. Tracy Bennett, who joined The New York Times as an associate puzzle editor in 2020, is now the editor of Wordle.

Dagny Salas has been named a deputy editor in Metro at The New York Times, where she will work with the desk to conceive and edit ambitious visual stories, identify digital objectives and find fresh storytelling approaches for daily and enterprise coverage.

Judson Jones has joined The New York Times as a meteorologist and reporter on the Weather Data team. He joins the staff from CNN, where he spent seven years as the digital meteorologist on the weather team.

Jillian Weinberger has joined Opinion Audio at The New York Times as a senior producer on the “First Person” podcast. She has spent most of her career in audio storytelling and live radio, at WNYC, “Reveal,” and, most recently, at Vox, where she was a deputy editorial director.

Vivian Nereim, The New York Times’ new Gulf bureau chief, is a long-serving foreign correspondent in Saudi Arabia who has been writing about the Gulf countries since 2011. She joins The Times from Bloomberg News, where she wrote about Saudi Arabia’s politics, economy and society.

Lindsay Zoladz has joined the Culture and Newsletter teams at The New York Times as a pop music critic with a special role: She will be writing a brand-new newsletter that recommends new songs (and older ones, too). Previously, she was a staff writer at The Ringer and the pop music critic at New York magazine, where her work earned her the American Society of Magazine Editors’ ASME Next Award for Journalists Under 30.

Sam Felix is The New York Times’ first head of the Audience Mission. In this newly created role, she will build on her vast platform strategy and partnerships work to lead the paper’s enterprise audience strategy efforts and the Audience Product team.

George Gustines has been promoted to director of Photo operations and strategy at The New York Times. He has been with The Times for more than three decades and has been in his current role, working across the visuals desks and leading the desks’ operations team, since 2019.

Abby Perpich has taken on a new role at The New York Times as associate audience editor, Visuals. She will work with Graphics, Photo, Video and Design as well as “The Upshot,” and the paper’s Weather and Data teams to help maximize audience through search and social programming strategies.

Annie-rose Strasser has joined

The New York Times as the new executive producer for Opinion Audio. She will lead the team of editors, producers, engineers, hosts and others who make and promote “The Ezra Klein Show,” “First Person” and “The Argument” — and also think creatively about new Opinion Audio opportunities.

The New York Times has welcomed

Ademola Bello to the Newsroom Development and Support team as editor for training and support, based in the London newsroom. Bello (who goes by Ade) joins the staff from The Times and Sunday Times in London.

The New York Times Newsroom Operations has welcomed a new senior operations manager: Rorna Richards.

Before joining The Times, Richards was business manager at The Wall

Street Journal Magazine, managing operations for the print, digital and the China team.

Anthony (Tony) Rotunno, a staff editor on the New York Times Wedding desk, has joined the Styles desk as fashion news editor. Rotunno, who joined The Times staff last year, will focus on expanding the desk’s service journalism as well as its coverage of design, trends and the ways fashion and style travel from the runway to everyday lives on the street and at home.

Jancee Dunn, a veteran reporter, has joined Well as a New York Times columnist. She has reported on health for The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, Health, Vogue and Outside, among many other outlets.

Jacqueline Bates has joined The New York Times as the new photo director for Opinion. She is the founding photography director of The California Sunday Magazine, the Pulitzer Prizewinning print magazine, and “Popup Magazine,” the acclaimed livemagazine show.

The New York Times has announced a few promotions in Opinion. Frank Augugliaro has been promoted to design director, Jessia Ma to deputy editor and Kate Elazegui to creative director. On the graphics team, Taylor Maggiacomo has joined the staff as the newest editor. She was an associate graphic editor at National Geographic. Gus Wezerek has been with Opinion Graphics since 2019 and has now been promoted to senior staff editor. In Opinion Audio, a few recent promotions also were announced. Annie Galvin joined Opinion Audio in April of 2021 to work on “The Ezra Klein Show,” and now she has been promoted to senior producer on the team. On the “First Person” team, Olivia Natt has been promoted to senior producer. Kristina Samulewski, an important teammate in Opinion Audio, was promoted to editorial assistant.

The New York Times has announced that Lowen Liu is The Upshot’s new deputy editor. He comes to The Times from Slate, where he worked for 12 years, serving at various times as its deputy editor, managing editor and copy chief.

Angela Fung has joined The New York Times as an associate operations manager, working with the Opinion staff and freelance operations. She joins The Times from Baruch College, where she was an operations and inventory manager at the Baruch Computing and Technology Center.

Longtime contributor Sadie Stein has joined the Book Review as preview editor at The New York Times.
